Trocoxil
[SKU00319]
$25.00

Trocoxil

What is Trocoxil?

Trocoxil is a prescription-only medication and is indicated for the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis in dogs aged 12 months or more in cases where continuous treatment exceeding one month is indicated.

Trocoxil contains the active ingredient mavacoxib and is a relatively new treatment for osteoarthritis in dogs. Trocoxil is available in brown tablet form (with Pfizer embossed onto the tablet) and in strengths of 20mg, 30mg, 75mg or 95mg.

In comparison with other arthritis treatments in animals, trocoxil can be administered relatively infrequently due to the drug's prolonged duration of action.

How It is Used

Trocoxil is used for pain relief and inflammation management.

How It Works

The active ingredient in Trocoxil is mavacoxib. It suppresses inflammation by inhibiting the effects of COX-2, an enzyme that helps in the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins.

How It Is Prepared

Trocoxil is available as six, twenty, thirty, seventy-five, or ninety-five milligram chewable tablets. The drug can be mixed into the dog’s food or can be given before a meal.

Buying

Trocoxil, just like other NSAIDS, requires a prescription from a vet.

Dose

Trocoxil is not a daily NSAID. Trocoxil is used 2 weeks apart for the first two tablets then once a month.

The dose will be worked out by your examining veterinarian.Available in 20mg, 30mg, 75mg and 95mg tablets.

Two  tablets per box.

Overdose and Side Effects

Trocoxil can cause a loss of appetite, diarrhea and vomiting. Trocoxil overdose can lead to gastrointestinal damage, blood thinning and kidney failure. If the dog experiences any of the side effects or receives an overdose, treatment should be stopped and the proper veterinary therapy should be given immediately.

Drug Interactions

Trocoxil should not be administered with other NSAIDs or glucocorticoids.

How to Use Trocoxil Safely

Trocoxil is not recommended for dogs less than one year old or small dogs weighing less than five kilograms. The drug can also exacerbate any existing health problems relating to the stomach, kidneys, liver or blood. Dogs allergic to NSAIDs should also avoid the drug. Lastly, Trocoxil should not be given to female dogs that are pregnant or lactating as it could cause a miscarriage or contamination of the breast milk.
